Ryley and Jarryd set the fastest double time on the Miller’s Run: 35:52

Ryley and Jarryd paddled the Miller’s Run in a double surfski on 5 September in 35 minutes 52 seconds, the fastest time ever recorded on the run in a double. They covered 11.63km at an average of 19.4 km/h.

In January 2011 surfski.info reported Dawid Mocke and Oscar Chalupsky’s 37:18 in a double as the fastest Miller’s Run of all time. Ryley and Jarryd went 1 minute 26 seconds quicker.

Their kilometre splits show where the run was won. They held under 3:05 for the first four kilometres, then hit 2:51 and 2:45 in kilometres six and seven, the fastest at 21.8 km/h. A paddler out on the water that day watched them come past with the highest cadence they had ever seen, fast enough to look like an express freight train was chasing them.

Fish River Canoe Marathon and SA K1 Champs 2026 poster stamped CANCELLED
The 2026 race poster, stamped cancelled.

Cancelled over Foot and Mouth Disease, with refunds through PSA

The Fish River Canoe Marathon organising committee has cancelled the 2026 race, which was scheduled for 2 and 3 October at Cradock, because of the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in the Eastern Cape.

The race committee took the decision with the Fish River Farmers Association and the local farming community. Every entrant gets a refund through the PaddleSport South Africa entry portal, and the organisers will help anyone whose refund does not come through. The committee says the race returns in 2027.

This is the second Fish lost to Foot and Mouth Disease in three years; the 2024 race was cancelled for the same reason. The Pre-Fish, set for 19 and 20 September at Cradock, is also cancelled. The 2026 race carried the SA K1 River Champs, and no replacement venue for the K1 title had been announced by 13 September.

On 4 September the organisers were still promoting entry deadlines of 20 September for pre-entries and 28 September for late entries, with an extra R200 for late entry and a start at Grassridge Dam. PSA posted the cancellation on 10 September, and Western Cape paddlers shared it on Facebook.

A gathering of world champs for the SA ocean titles in East London

The Pete Marlin Surfski Race in East London carries both SA ocean titles this year: the SA S1 Champs on Saturday 31 October and the SA S2 Champs on Sunday 1 November. The organisers are promoting it as a gathering of world champs, with more than R140,000 in prize money and over 150 championship medals.

Andy Birkett won both the singles and doubles in 2025. In a pre-race message from last year’s podium he said he is not confident of defending his titles, but that it is one of his favourite races. Jade Wilson, a regular on the women’s podium, and Dawid Mocke are both training for it.

Entries are open on the PaddleSport SA entry portal, and paddlers need open ocean surfski proficiency on their PSA profile. Anyone who wants the race shirt must enter by 21 September.

This fortnight’s Wednesday Q&A on water safety.

Why the entry system turns away experienced paddlers

A paddler who has raced river and ski before can still be blocked from entering an event if their online profile does not show the right proficiency for it.

Proficiencies can only be added by a designated safety officer on the PSA safety portal. Past races count for nothing if the proficiency is missing from the profile, so the fix is to ask your club’s safety officer to update it before entries close.

The Liebenbergsvlei Clean Water Challenge now carries both national river titles.

Low water on the Breede sends the K2 title to Liebenbergsvlei

The PSA Marathon Technical Committee decided, and the Board approved, that the SA K2 River Champs will be hosted by Liebenbergsvlei. The announcement gave low water in the Breede River as the reason.

Three races now run over the weekend of 12 and 13 September. SA K2 Champs on the Saturday, SA K3 Champs on the Sunday, and the LBV Clean Water Challenge for anyone doing both days in the same boat. Saturday starts at 10:30 and Sunday at 08:00, over 32km per day, graded B, running from Reitz Waterworks to Zorgvliet.

Entries have reopened. Paddlers entering both days in the same boat are entered automatically into whichever SA champs applies, and the organisers asked people not to pay twice. Entering different boats on the two days means entering Saturday and Sunday separately, at half the fee each.

PaddleSport South Africa technical committees table
Who sits on each PSA technical committee, as published by PSA.

Who chairs what, and where an entry fee goes

PSA published two reference sheets this fortnight. The first lists its technical committees. Waldo van Der Linde chairs Marathon, Charl Van Wyk chairs Ocean Paddling, Nichole Wilson chairs Sprints on an interim basis, Niel Burger chairs Canoe Polo and Don Wewege chairs Slalom and Kayak Cross.

The second breaks down a race entry. The race organiser takes the largest share. A union fee or levy applies to certain races as each union decides. The Athlete Tour Fund draws up to R20 per paddler per day on multi day events, national champs and ocean events needing open ocean proficiency, and is controlled by the discipline committees. Indemnity insurance is R4.00 or R4.70. Payfast takes 3.45%. System maintenance takes 1.05% where event income is above R100k and 2.55% below it. PSA administration of the online entry system takes 0.5%.

A broken leash off Roman Rock, and a paddler who turned back

A 73 year old surfski paddler fell out of his boat about one nautical mile north of Roman Rock on Tuesday 25 August. His leash had broken, and the ski blew away from him in strong wind.

Another paddler saw it happen, turned back, and used a bungee cord to tow the empty ski to the man in the water. Both activated their NSRI SafeTrx alerts and stayed afloat together. NSRI Simon’s Town was activated at 11:24 and launched the rescue craft Donna Nicholas into two metre swells and a 30 knot south easter. Two rescue swimmers went in, and the casualty came aboard with his ski. He was treated for mild hypothermia and was not injured.

At least five humpback whales breached around the rescue craft while the recovery ran. The paddler who raised the alarm carried on to Fish Hoek Beach. NSRI commended his swift actions.

Two things did the work here: another paddler who turned back, and SafeTrx alerts that gave the crew a position to launch to. The leash is the part that failed. The full NSRI report is at nsri.org.za.

    Langebaan Lagoon · 10 October 2026
Westcoast Warriors run the first Paddle the Lagoon from the Langebaan Yacht Club.

A first running on the Langebaan Lagoon

Westcoast Warriors host the first Paddle the Lagoon on Saturday 10 October, starting and finishing at the Langebaan Yacht Club. Sunday 11 October is the reserve day if conditions on the Saturday are unsafe.

Surfski singles and doubles race a 13km mid course or a 17km long course. A 6.5km short course is open to surfskis and to sea and touring kayaks, single or double. Doubles can be mixed or same gender, and there are no age categories. Positions only are recorded in each category.

Registration runs at the Yacht Club on Friday 9 October from 17:00 to 18:30, and on the Saturday morning from 08:00 to 11:00. Paddlers staying over on the Friday are asked to register that evening. Everyone collects a key ring memento and a goodie bag. The race briefing is at 12:15 and the starts are planned for 13:00, subject to the weather and the sea on the day. Prize giving and a lucky draw follow at about 17:00, and the Yacht Club restaurant runs a race day braai.

A life jacket is compulsory for every paddler. A support boat covers the course, routes may be shortened for safety, and anyone withdrawing should still report to the organisers’ desk. Finishers must come through the official finish posts to be recorded. Parking is on Lagoon Street above Sandbaai, with security on hand, and boats can go down to the Sandbaai beach before the start.

Entries are on Entry Ninja. The organisers also run a WhatsApp group for updates on this race and future ones.

This is not a PaddleSport South Africa sanctioned event, so paddlers do not need to be registered to enter.

Western Cape’s Winter River Season Unravels

Western Cape river racing has lost most of its winter season to low water, with a run of cancellations across the region’s river system.

Maties Canoeing’s Nekkies–Eilanda, set for 1 August, was the first to go, called off after the Breede’s flow dropped to 3.5 cumecs. Eilanda to Robertson and the Giel van Deventer K2 Memorial followed. Robertson to Bonnievale, set for 22 August, is unlikely to go ahead for the same reason. The Olifants River race has also been cancelled. Two weeks after the first cancellation, organisers called off the region’s biggest river race of the year, the AJM Breede River Canoe Marathon and 2026 SA K2 River Championships, due to run 5 and 6 September. In a statement on 14 August, the Western Cape Canoe Union cited the river running at 4 cumecs and dropping, no rain forecast for the Breede catchment, new hazards and blockages left by earlier flood damage, and limited access to safety points along the course. Race-weekend venues are also still being rebuilt, with limited toilet and ablution facilities. The union thanked title sponsor AJM and partners Steri Stumpie, Maurten, Salt Kayaks and Orka “for supporting us this far” and said it hopes to build on the relationship for future editions.

The dry river beds fit a pattern meteorologists have tracked since June, when the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration placed an El Niño advisory in effect, with most forecast models expecting the event to strengthen through spring. Cape Town’s dams still held 77.7% of capacity as of 7 August, but that’s 13 percentage points down on the same week last year, and researchers note that healthy dam storage can mask a much drier season in the rivers that feed it. The city logged its driest July in 68 years, with the South African Weather Service recording several parts of the southwestern Cape’s lowest July rainfall on record.

SA Team Finishes Fourth Twice at the Sella Descent

The 88th Descenso Internacional del Sella, the mass-start marathon down Spain’s Sella River from Arriondas to Ribadesella, ran on 8 August with more than 1,200 boats on the water.

Home paddlers Walter Bouzán and Alberto Llera won the 20 km race. It was a 13th Sella title for the 48-year-old Bouzán and a first for the 24-year-old Llera, whose father won the same race in 1996.

South Africa’s Josh Fenn and Saskia Hockly both finished fourth in the senior K1 fleet, just off the podium. Clint Cook and Uli Hart had a rougher run in the senior K2: a foot pedal broke five kilometres into the race, and Cook tied the rudder cable to his foot to steer the boat home.

The ICF Relaunches as Paddle Worldwide

Watch: the Paddle Worldwide reveal (opens in a new tab).

The International Canoe Federation has renamed itself Paddle Worldwide, revealing the new identity on 29 July at the 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Oklahoma City.

The name change closes out the federation’s two-year “Fit for Future” review and follows more than a century of governing the sport since 1924. Paddle Worldwide is built as an open identity that continental associations, national federations, clubs and event organisers can adopt alongside their own branding. The new look leads with orange and black, a shift from the ICF’s long-standing blue.

The federation says the rename covers every level of the sport, from a first stroke on flat water to Olympic finals, and spans all ten disciplines it governs, including marathon, sprint, slalom, ocean racing and SUP.

Two South Africans Race the Slalom Worlds

The 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships ran 20–25 July at Riversport OKC, drawing 256 athletes from 50 countries to the venue built for the 2028 Olympic slalom events.

Matthew Van Heerden and Waris Mills carried the South African flag into the kayak cross event. Van Heerden finished 68th; Mills was a hard-fought 57th. Morocco’s entry pushed South Africa to second among African nations, behind Senegal, Djibouti and Kenya.

Mick O’Meara Claims a Faster Lap of Ireland

Waterford paddler Mick O’Meara circumnavigated Ireland by sea kayak in 20 days in July 2026, a new record.

O’Meara set the previous benchmark himself in 2015, completing the roughly 1,500 km solo, unsupported lap in 23 days. His 2026 run cuts three days off that mark. Separately, US paddlers Juliana Brotzman and Nate Gueltzau were also targeting the Ireland circumnavigation record this year, aiming for 15 to 22 days.

    Maties Canoeing’s Nekkies–Eilanda

The 27 km K2 B-grade race (K1s welcome) that was set for Nekkies Resort on Saturday 1 August has been cancelled. The club cited low water on the Breede, measured at 3.5 cumecs on the day.

The cancellation fits a dry pattern across the province. Cape Town International Airport recorded 14.4 mm of rain in July, its driest July in 68 years, and the South African Weather Service reported several parts of the southwestern Western Cape logging their lowest July rainfall on record. SAWS attributes the dry spell to a persistent Atlantic high-pressure system blocking cold fronts, and forecasters are watching a strengthening El Niño for its effect on the region’s rivers and dams through the rest of the season.

The Berg Countdown: 240 km of Winter River Awaits

South Africa’s longest and most feared river marathon is almost here. The Berg River Canoe Marathon starts on Tuesday 15 July and runs four brutal winter days to Saturday 18 July, tracing the classic 240 km line from Paarl to the West Coast harbour of Velddrif.

Overnight stops fall at Zonquasdrift, Bridgetown and Zoutkloof, with a field of more than 200 paddlers expected. Seeding time trials on the eve of the race decide the order of the first 60 places before anyone reaches open river — fast, cold, tree-choked channels that reward nerve as much as fitness.

Last year’s 2025 edition went to Hank McGregor, then 47, who took a remarkable 14th Berg title in Velddrif with Siseko Ntondini on his wave; Jenna Nisbet controlled the women’s race throughout. McGregor has confirmed his entry for 2026 (see Berg build-up) — whether he defends, and who from the new generation steps up, is the story to watch as seeding firms up this week.

    Kira Bester racing her surfski

    Kira Bester

Few SA paddlers are in better form heading into the second half of 2026. A two-time ICF Canoe Ocean Racing world champion, Bester launched the new World Series season with victory at the Madeira opener — a statement against a deep international field.

Racing out of the Carbonology Sport and Orka Squad camps, her blend of flat-water sprint speed and ocean craft makes her one of the most complete women’s paddlers on the circuit. With Tahiti and the European season ahead, she reaches every start line a medal threat.

    Club & Gear

    Club news

Maties eye another big Berg turnout. The Stellenbosch-based Maties Canoe Club has traditionally fielded one of the largest single-club contingents at the Berg — last year at least 17 paddlers, spearheaded by their veteran “Turbo Toppies.” Development pathways stay in focus too: SCARC product Siseko Ntondini — a multiple Berg podium finisher alongside McGregor — remains one of SA’s standout development stories.

Surfski Club × Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club. A new corporate affiliation gives Surfski Club members a secure waterfront base in Gordon’s Bay Harbour: covered ski storage with individual lock-ups, freshwater wash-down, changing rooms and hot showers, restaurant and bar at member pricing, and a safe harbour launch. Weekly time trial every Wednesday at 17:00, launching from in front of GBYC.

    Gear news

Local skis, world stage. South Africa remains a global hub for surfski manufacturing. Fenn Kayaks (East London, est. 1988) and Carbonology Sport continue to lead the export-grade market — Carbonology’s Oscar Chalupsky-linked “ChalupSki,” introduced in 2025, is still drawing downwind interest this winter. With the Berg approaching, the practical focus is marathon boat prep: hull checks, rudder lines and serious cold-water kit.
